When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and White, you photograph their souls.

-Ted Grant

I've been trying to organise my image folders today in order to finalise the images in my book. I discovered one folder named 'black and white' that I completely forgot about. It's filled with unsorted black and white photos, I'm not sure if I've ever shared any of them before. But I felt like posting some now. There is something so appealing about the black and white aesthetic, it seems almost abstract to me. There is also something therapeutic about lining-up black and white images together.

Image credits: all images are my own.

I love these images and love that quote. Black and white speaks to me, calms and settles me, gives me space and peace to reflect and absorb. I love these. :-)

I love the black and white pictures of the Schoenbrunn Palace - I was there last fall and it and the grounds were intimidating!

That's a beautiful typewriter! Black and white photos are indeed beautiful, but I still like colour a lot more - especially in landscapes!

B&W has always been my photographic home. i find it both peels back and sinks in.

how fun to find a forgotten folder of photos.

Beautiful! I always love seeing your photos. It's amazing how black and white seems like a special effort--not something we naturally gravitate towards when taking photos. Yet I'm always amazed at the results when I do use a roll of black and white. Love the quote!

Interesting quote... Black and white images always capture things a little differently, not sure what it is.. Nice pictures though, some create that feeling of familiarity or nostalgia and some are completely foreign to me. Good luck with the book!

Black and white photography calls to my soul. There's something amazing about the monochrome depth and the amazing difference between black and white and color photos. The world looks different in monochrome.

beautiful photos...i totally agree with you about black and white pictures, they seem to be purer, providing a clear version of reality...black and white helps me see a picture differently, more geometrically, identifying lines, obscure areas and lighter ones. It makes me see the general synthesis of the frame and in this way i can work on the composition better than with color

The first photo is my favorite. Coincidentally, I just today posted some black and white photos too, trying to change things up a bit. :)

Just last night, over supper, I was discussing returning to black and white film. Very late to digital, I miss the rigour and unpredictability of film. And the particular quality of monochrome. That quote strengthens my resolve.

I love these photos Hila. Black and white photography is always so beautiful - it adds such mood and texture to the images.

PS. That kitty looks just like my own feline friend, Jones. :)

The only thing I'm not convinced is embiggened by black and white photography is food. It just never looks as interesting to me. However on the whole I love black and white photography, so beautiful and soulful. Love this collection of yours.

wow, what a great post! I took me a little while to read it ;-)
I love travelling by train, in fact I prefer train even if by airplane might be quicker. Taking one day the orient express would be asome (I saw it in Istanbul in the train station - but we went by airplane) but an even bigger dream is taking the trans-sibirian, that would be sooo great!

That quote is perfect. I'm on a black and white photo kick at the moment, it's all I want to shoot.

You've recorded such gorgeous images, here.

kultur und Stil/Anita: I think your comment 'travelled' to the wrong post :) An adventurous comment! I would love to take trans-Siberian as well, another dream to add to the list.

erica-knits: thanks so much!

These are lovely. I used to carry around a disposable camera and snap a picture only every once in a while - those rolls were always so much more interesting than my 100s of digital pics. Now I have a mind to do the same but with b&w!
