I have a new regular feature for The Australian Ballet's blog, Behind Ballet, called Styling dance films. First up is The Red Shoes. I had so much fun writing this, I hope you have as much fun reading it. Stay tuned for more dance films to be explored ...

What's your favourite ballet or dance film?

I absolutely love this film. Visually it is stunning! I love the scene when all the dancers are rehearsing in their colorful leotards!

I love the red shoes! My grandfather used to make us watch classic films when we stayed at his house in the summer. I would watch this one over and over, it's so beautiful. What a fun feature to write!

Ahhh what a lovely little collage there!
I am really interested in the concept of this film - a film about a dance based on a fairy tale (a translated fairy tale no less) that references an artistic movement, and is now being viewed as a cultural example of a different era...
So many possible ways to interpret a thing! Just imagine how differently the clothes would have been interpreted by Andersen's contemporaries, by the film's contemporaries, by the pre-Raph artists...
The separation of artistic media never seemed more superfluous.

Hi, thanks for your previous posts. Yours are always a good start for a day. I have to ask one unrelated question: Have you seen the Wim Wenders film on Pina Bausch (a 3d arthouse cinema film about dance)? It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on that one.

Hmm, I actually don't have a favorite dance film! Maybe I should look into it!

What a great project!! I grew up on musicals and dance movies, borrowing everyone I could find from the library. :-) I love so many I couldn't possibly narrow it down to one. :-)

ever since i was a small gal dancing ballet, i've loved this movie. i love that you love this movie! and i am super thrilled about this new style column you'll be doing. i read beyond ballet now as an outsider (no longer in dance), but i enjoy it so much. thanks + keep up your lovely work!

Oh too cute! Have you seen the "living in" category on Design Sponge (I'm sure you have) anyway, I just love love love it. That's where I first found out about the red shoes, actually. And I think it's my favourite dance movie, I know, so unoriginal, but I just love those red lips.

When I imagine "red" in my mind it's the color in The Red Shoes. I always look for it when I'm buying lipstick - it's like the color of blood just when it hits oxygen (I know that is morbid.)

p.s. I've been challenging myself with "why I adore the night" - I think it will be a good exercise for me, the constant complainer about the short days in winter. Submission to come.

Love your new regular feature, Hila. Love The Red Shoes. Love it all.

As to favourite ballet, it is hard to pick just one. At present, I can't shake Prokofiev's fantastical Romeo & Juliet score from my head. I hear it everywhere. But a favourite of mine has long been Giselle for it was the first I saw performed at the State Theatre. I saw it with my class and our dance teacher demonstrated when it was suitable to applaud. (Of course I may have been to something with my parents before this but memory is like that, no?)

Great new feature! That's definitely my favorite dance film...and I think a subconscious reason why I always own a pair of red ballet flats.
